Herb Jubirt knew he liked making people laugh, but it wasn't until prompting from a college dean that he seriously considered becoming a comedian.
During his more than 40 years in entertainment, he opened for singer Al Green, performed at several nightclubs in Chicago and recorded two comedy albums.
"He had a natural sense of humor," said Gloria, his wife of 44 years. "He was the life of the party."
After military service, Mr. Jubirt moved to Chicago to study communication arts at Columbia College. There, he was encouraged by the school's dean to hone his comedic skills and focus on becoming a comedian rather than a radio announcer. He graduated from Columbia in the mid-1950s and set out to get gigs at local nightclubs.
In the early 1970s, the comedian known as "Jub" by his friends got his big break while filling in for a regular at Mister Kelly's, a popular Rush Street nightclub.
A promoter for R&B singer Green happened to be in the audience that night and saw Mr. Jubirt's standup routine. Mr. Jubirt was asked by Green's manager to tour the country and open for the singer.
The longtime South Side resident poked fun at current events and often drew on his own life experiences for material. His incredible memory and the way he connected with audiences set him apart from other comedians, said Dick Gregory, a longtime friend and a former comedian.
"He just wanted to be funny and he was," Gregory said.
After touring with Green for nearly a decade, Mr. Jubirt returned to Chicago in the early 1980s and worked at clubs here.
He worked as a Cook County sheriff's officer from the late 1980s until 1998, but continued writing material for other comedians and made walk-on appearances in both "Barbershop" movies.
"He was the greatest person I have ever met in my life because of his attitude toward people," his wife said. " He would find something good in everybody. Even when a the person came off as plain negative, Jub could find something positive in that person." excerpt Chicago Tribune

Fred's
comedy and musical talents were enjoyed by many in East Tennessee and
Nashville with Red Rector as the comedy duo "Red and Fred,
the Spivey Mountain Boys" on the Mid-day Merry-Go-Round at WNOX and
the Cas Walker Farm and Home Hour. Specifically, in Sevier County he
performed at the Archie Campbell Hee Haw Show and the Comedy Barn. In
Nashville, he performed at the Boots Randolph Dinner Theater, and most
