Dick Gregory - Live At The Village Gate 1970

Dick Gregory
Richard Claxton Gregory
Oct 12 1932 -
Official Site
Dick Gregory was never your classic stand up comedian. When he started, he raised issues in a way that was never done before, especially because nobody dared. And later on, his shows were more lectures and preach than comedy. It might sound like a bad idea but given the depth and the power of this CD, I don't think anybody will mind or complain.
This one is among the great ones, close to The Light Side-The Dark Side or DG's Frankenstein, some of the material can be found on the other CDs but there are always differences and it's a bit like Bill Hicks, very soon, you'll need them all. Source: Amazon

Dick Gregory - Write Me In 1968

Dick Gregory
Richard Claxton Gregory
Oct 12 1932 -
Official Site

Published in 1968, this is Dick Gregory's platform as a write-in candidate for President. But it's much more than just that. Full of jokes, reflections, and great no-bullshit candor. Gregory seems to know he's a longshot and this allows for a very loose refreshing style on tightlip subjects such as race, violence, diet, etc. Also contains a lot of personal history (including many comments about his close relationship with MLK, written just months after King was assassinated), etc. This is a valuable piece of history to anyone interested in 1960s counterculture, civil rights, US history, etc. It's sad that a book as good as this has been out of print for nearly forty years. This book is also the originator of the "Reagan spelled backwards is Nigger" joke from the second side of SPREE (though the joke is performed by a different comedian on the SPREE record). Victoria Wood - Lucky Bag 1983 (UK)

Victoria Wood
Victoria Wood
aka Victoria Wood CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire)
May 19 1953 -
Official Site

Victoria Wood is a talented comedy actress/writer/singer who has built up a national reputation following a string of self-written TV plays, films and sketch shows. Born in 1953 in Lancashire in Northern England she first had small screen exposure in the TV talent search show New Faces when she sang comedy songs of her own composition. Accompanying herself on the piano, she scored heavily with viewing audiences with her jaunty tunes, which often belied her sharp, poignant lyrics. Her regular themes of unrequited love, tedium, mismatched couples, and suburban living as well as her ability to find humour in the minutiae of modern life, stood her in good stead when she moved into writing plays for the stage and later for television. Here is a special download for you - my rip/remaster/encode of Victoria Wood's classic 'Lucky Bag' LP, released in 1983 and recorded during her first ever solo tour. Never reissued on CD (for no adequately explained reason), this offers over an hour of absolutely flawless standup, monologue and songs both comic and straight.
Anyone dismissing Ms Wood as cosy, blunt or safe could do worse than to hear this set - absolutely vitriolic in places, and displaying an absolute refusal to suffer fools gladly. Pretty much entirely still relevant today too - the song 'Northerners' for instance could work perfectly as a barbed attack on the recent career of Peter Kay. Source: www.cookdandbombd

Bob & Ray - Classic Bob & Ray Vol 1-4 1991

Bob
Robert Brackett Elliott

Ray
Raymond Walter Goulding
Lowell, Massachusetts, USA
Mar 20 1922 – Mar 24 1990 age 68
Bob & Ray, legendary American humorists, are loved by fans and by fellow humorists, comedians and broadcasters. Bob & Ray's 40-year career began at WHDH, Boston. Bob was a disc jockey, and Ray a newscaster. When the Red Sox games were delayed on account of rain, they began to amuse each other to fill the time. Soon they had a daily show of their own, "Matinee with Bob & Ray," an improvised, madcap exercise in controlled chaos. Over their long career, they created more than a hundred characters, all played by Bob or Ray: Ace reporter Wally Ballou, winner of 17 awards for diction; Mary McGoon, whose recipe for frozen ginger ale salad prefigures Martha Stewart; Biff Burns in the sports room; Webley Webster; Barry Campbell, a third rate actor with an ego the size of the universe; Mary Backstayge, Noble Wife whose pals travel the world in search of goofy adventure. Their humor is subtle, dry, intelligent and clean but never treacly. Bob & Ray have a keen ear for language, how it is used and misused by the con artists, hucksters and hustlers who populate radio and television, even today. Their humor is timeless. Bob & Ray's satire of soap operas, game shows, radio shrinks and other self-appointed "experts," and commercials, is as pertinent today as it was in 1946 when they began. They belong in the pantheon of American humor, alongside Mark Twain, George Ade, Will Rogers, S. J. Pearlman, Kurt Vonnegut and Garrison Keillor. In 1951 NBC brought them to New York for a daily 15-minute television program, and network radio shows including, Monitor. Over the next thirty years they appeared on every major network, and on three powerful New York radio stations. They finished their radio career on public radio with the "The Bob & Ray Public Radio Show" (1982-2004), and two sold-out, farewell appearances at Carnegie Hall (1984). All of these performances have been preserved on CDs from Bobandray.com.  Bob & Ray have won three Peabody Awards and three Grammy nominations, as well as many other prestigious honors. MacLean & MacLean were best known for their raunchy, often scatological humour, which was combined with (usually humorous) renditions of folk and popular songs, with Blair playing guitar and Gary playing banjo and bongo drums. The duo began performing in 1972 and during their career played the Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver, British Columbia, the 1983 Just for Laughs festival in Montreal, and the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
