Walker enjoyed a great deal of visibility in the mid- to late '70s,
when he was famous for his portrayal of J.J. Evans on the CBS sitcom
Good Times. It was in 1975 that Buddah released Dyn-O-Mite, Walker's
first standup comedy album. Recorded live at the Cellar Door in
Washington, D.C., this vinyl LP underscores Walker's appreciation of
Richard Pryor (who was huge at the time). Unlike Pryor, Walker doesn't
get into sexually explicit material or inundate listeners with
profanity. But like Pryor, he has a lot of fun confronting racial
stereotypes. While Walker's material falls short of brilliant, the
native New Yorker (who was only 25 when this LP came out) shows himself
to be a genuinely funny social commentator. As time passed, Walker
evolved as a comedian; Dyn-O Mite offers an enjoyable snapshot of where
he was in 1975.
